As in so many other cities across the U.S., affordable housing has not kept pace with population growth and has become a serious and challenging issue.

In Washington, D.C., under the leadership of Mayor Muriel Bowser, affordable housing is one of the city’s highest priorities.

According to the D.C. Mayor’s website, “Since taking office in 2015, Mayor Bowser has invested $100 million annually in the Housing Production Trust Fund, created the Housing Preservation Fund, and produced or preserved over 3,600 units of affordable housing, with almost 5,000 units in the process of being constructed.”

Affordable housing is also a long-term concern of the D.C. Mayor’s Interfaith Council.

In partnership with the city, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church donated the land for a 71-unit affordable housing project, the Liberty Place Apartments, in downtown D.C.

Rev. Thomas Bowen, director of the D.C. Office of Religious Affairs, and members of the D.C.Mayor’s Interfaith Council, joined the mayor and other government and private sector leaders at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Rev. Susan Taylor, an active member of the council, represented the Church of Scientology at the groundbreaking celebration.
